When it comes to San Diego Comic-Con, you just never know when something Doctor Who-related is going to pop up, and Saturday’s panel for Nickelodeon’s animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series is not one of the places you’d expect to hear about Doctor Who.

Now, before you get too excited, please note that David Tennant was not actually at the Comic-Con panel. Alas, the idea of Peter Capaldi, Matt Smith, and David Tennant all attending Comic-Con the same weekend would be too much to ask. No, the panel actually consisted of TMNT voice actors Seth Green (Leonardo), Sean Astin (Raphael), Rob Paulsen (Donatello), Greg Cipes (Michelangelo), Kevin Michael Richardson (Shredder), Eric Bauza (Tiger Claw) and Fred Tatasciore (Rocksteady).
However, Tennant’s name came up when the panel previewed the new characters for Season Four. The new season will see the Turtles heading to outer space, so there’ll be a whole host of strange new characters. And they’ve lined up an awesome amount of talent to give voice to them.
Tennant will guest-star as The Fugitoid, an alien scientist whose physical body was destroyed, leaving his brain to be housed in a new robotic body (as seen in the photo on the right):
Other guest stars for next season include Peter Stormare as the insectoid Lord Dregg, Star Trek‘s Michael Dorn as Captain Mozar, Ron Perlman as Armageddon, Lance Henriksen as Zog, and Zelda Williams as Mona Lisa. Williams (who is the late Robin Williams’ daughter, by the way) showed her enthusiasm on Instagram:

It was also revealed to the crowd that Nickelodeon had picked up the show for a 20-episode fifth season. I’ll admit, I’ve only caught a few episodes of the new TMNT show, but I did enjoy it. It’s worlds better than that horrid Michael Bay-produced film from last year. Sounds like I need to get caught up before the new season starts.
In related news, at yesterday’s panel for IDW Comics, it was revealed that the company is partnering with DC Comics for a new miniseries featuring the Ninja Turtles and Batman. That’s the kind of insanity I can get behind.
