It’s news that really should surprise no one, but it’s nice to have official confirmation nonetheless: Doctor Who will indeed return for a tenth series.

Yesterday saw the release of the BBC Annual Review, which highlights the accomplishments of the publicly-funded network and outlines plans for the future. Tucked away on page 32 of the report is this little gem:
"During the year matters under review included plans to launch the global genre brands BBC First in Australia and New Zealand on Foxtel and BBC Brit and BBC Earth in Poland; and investments in The Musketeers S3 and Doctor Who S10. Additionally, during the year WEx reviewed people policies and development opportunities across the company."
So there you have it; a tenth series of Doctor Who is all but a foregone fact in the eyes of the BBC. It would actually be much more shocking to learn that there wouldn’t be a Doctor Who Series 10, especially considering we’ve had hints that it was coming for quite a while.

In May, Wales Online reported in their interview with showrunner Steven Moffat that he had recently signed on for another series of Doctor Who himself. And Peter Capaldi has given numerous hints that he has no plans to leave anytime soon (not that that’s confirmation of anything other than an air of confidence in the show being renewed).
Doctor Who was actually on the receiving end of some high praise in the BBC Annual Review, being touted as one of the year’s big success stories. Series 8 was aired in over 70 countries and set ratings records on both BBC America and Space (Canada). Another accomplishment was the success of last year’s Doctor Who World Tour:
"Building on the success of the 50th anniversary we embarked on a 12-day global promotional tour for series eight. We visited South Korea, Australia, USA, Mexico and Brazil introducing the Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, and companion Clara, Jenna Coleman, to international fans. This was a first for a British TV series and featured a creative social media programme with activity on Facebook generating 130m post impressions and more than 2m video views across Facebook and YouTube."
Very exciting news and further proof that the popularity of Doctor Who continues to rise.
