Revisiting Game of Thrones death scenes in animated form

One of the favorite pastimes of the ever-vibrant Game of Thrones creative community is revisiting the gory, violent, and often traumatizing death scenes from the series, of which there are many. That includes this nifty piece by animator Aristarchos Papadaniel, who also provides a haunting cover version of “The Rains of Castamere.” (Surprising no one, the title of the piece is “The Rains of Castamere: An Animated Choreography of Departures.”) Check it out.

Interestingly, Aristarchos is very selective in what gets depicted from the iconic scenes. For example, we only see Robb falling to the ground, or blood spilling from Catelyn’s neck. The Mountain is even excluded from Oberyn’s bit, thus emphasizing the character flaw that ultimately led to his gruesome, stomach-churning demise. It’s a dark and moody piece topped off with an ominous note: “The Lannisters send their regards to the winter that comes.” Unfortunately for the Lannisters, the winter that comes may well be their last.
