Doctor Who Multiple Doctor Stories from A Different Angle

When one thinks back to those episodes of Doctor Who featuring multiple Doctors, one automatically thinks of the current Doctor running in to previous incarnations of himself, teaming up as they stop some menace from destroying all of time and space. It certainly makes sense to look at it from that vantage point; as we follow the current Doctor, we would see the episodes from his vantage point, and get to take a fond look back to his past.

Even though this makes sense, why not have an episode with multiple Doctors from a different perspective? Why not, while following the current Doctor in that episode, have a mysterious Doctor appear? Even if this Doctor, be it the Twelfth or any future incarnations, are not close to regenerating, just having an unknown Doctor as part of a multiple Doctor storyline would be quite the different take.

This Doctor, later revealed to be a future incarnation, would certainly set the stage for quite a few questions. Speculation would abound as to when this incarnation would appear, and even what incarnation of the Doctor this would be. If a future Doctor appears with the Twelfth Doctor, for example, does that mean that we are seeing the Thirteenth Doctor? Or would it be a regenerated Doctor from further in the future?

It would also be a unique way to see what it must have been like for the past Doctors to run into their future incarnations. We could see the interloper from their vantage point, as that mystery incarnation wanders through with the current Doctor in tow, fighting their common foes in tandem. Perhaps we could even get a Doctor from the past involved as well, with the Doctors of the Past, Present and Future taking on some force that has traveled through time, requiring these incarnations to band together in order to stop their nefarious plot from coming to fruition.

While this would, in theory, make the BBC commit to an actor or actress to take on the mantle of the Doctor years in advance, there could be ways around that. Supposing that, for whatever reason, the timing does not work out or one of the sides determines that it would not be a good match. If not, the timelines could be rewritten, where that incarnation of the Doctor becomes someone else.

As entertaining as the multiple Doctor stories are on Doctor Who, it is time to attack this from another another angle. Why not take a look at what it is like to see a future incarnation appear in the current Doctor’s timeline? It would certainly make for an interesting episode or two.
