Doctor Who Series 9: How to Watch in the US Without BBC America

If you live in the UK, watching the new series of Doctor Who is easy: if you have a TV (and paid your annual TV license like a good citizen), then you’ll have BBC beamed into your house whether you want it or not. In the US and other countries, though, it’s not quite that simple.

Here in the US, new episodes of Doctor Who air on BBC America — a cable/satellite channel. Depending on your provider, BBC America is often not even included in the basic package, meaning you’ll have to add an expensive package to your cable bill, most likely full of other channels you’ll never even watch. Fortunately, if you’re a cord-cutter (like me), there are other options available.

(And, yes, before someone in the comments says it, you can find pirated Doctor Who episodes on a number of websites and torrents minutes after they air. Keep in mind, though, BBC is a publicly-funded organization and the money they collect is funneled directly back into their programs. If you want to keep enjoying the new higher-budgeted Doctor Who we’ve become accustomed to, you owe it to keep money flowing back to the BBC.)

These days, Doctor Who episodes are available the day after they air on a number of digital platforms. The great people over at Kasterborous put together a list of all the different providers in the US, along with their season-pass pricing:

In fact, all of the providers above are taking pre-orders for Series 9 now, so you can pay now and be ready to go when the new season begins.

Also, Kasterborous points out that a DVD/Blu-Ray release titled Doctor Who: Series 9 Part 1 is available for pre-order on Amazon with a listed release date of November 3. That would lead one to presume a Series 9 Part 2 release will come later on, followed by the full series box set.

Of course, your other option is to wait for Netflix, but if this year is any indication, you’ll be waiting for quite a while. In my mind, it’s well worth the price to stay up-to-date on what looks to be a very exciting new series of Doctor Who.
