REVIEW: Doctor Who: Four Doctors #3 (Comic Book)
By Joel Getter
"“We all have so many aspects to ourselves, I suppose. The Doctors get to see theirs from a distance.”"
Since his brief scene at the beginning of the first issue, I have eagerly been waiting for the return of the War Doctor. I feel Paul Cornell has been teasing me. This series is called Four Doctors, so come on and get on with it. Having been a fan for a number of years, I should have known that he would deliver up something even better. This week’s issue takes the story into unfathomable depths of timey-whimey fun.

When we last left the Doctors, they had just fulfilled the end of the universe prophecy with the photograph being taken. The group is split up and each has to make their way through a gigantic maze. I liked this scene very much, as each Doctor is with a different companion. There is a lovely moment of dialogue between Clara and the Eleventh Doctor (who hasn’t met her yet). Reaching the end of the maze, the group discovers a continuity bomb, the deadliest weapon of the Time War. This device takes you into your future time stream at a moment when you had to make a difficult decision, showing you the outcome if you had chosen the opposite. For the Tenth Doctor, it is letting Wilf die at ‘The End of Time‘ and becoming a tyrannical Time Lord Victorius. Eleven lives a blissful life with River Song while all of time has collapsed around them. The Twelfth Doctor is an embittered hermit following his abandonment by Clara. The travelers realize the only way to stop jumping from one alternate reality to another is to enter one physically. Once physical again, they convince the alternate Doctor to take them back to Marinus. Once they arrive, we have our next cliffhanger. I’ve seen this setup before in other science fiction shows and movies, but it is definitely awesome to see this happen in Doctor Who.

My one quibble with this series is that we haven’t seen a lot of the Voord yet. Cornell has given us a new and more powerful version of this species, and I am anxious to see what he does. Now that things have fallen into place, maybe we will get to see these new Voord in action. This issue definitely packs a punch with the delivery of Four Doctors to the story. However, I’m still holding out to see the War Doctor one more time.
One of the reasons I love Paul Cornell is his ability to take Doctor Who to new levels of enjoyment. This series has definitely been a fun ride, and I am excited to see where he takes us next. I will be heading to my local comic book store in a few days for the next installment.
