Doctor Who To See the Return of River Song

Over the ten years that Doctor Who has been back on the airwaves, there have been quite a few characters that have come and gone in the Doctor’s life. Some have appeared only once, yet made an indelible impact. Others have continued to come and go, leaving an impression each time they have crossed paths with the Doctor.

One of those who has continued to come and go was River Song. The archaeologist/criminal/wife of the Doctor, River was one of the more beloved recurring characters on Doctor Who, one that we have been waiting to see return for quite some time. Now, that wait is over, as River Song will be returning to Doctor Who as part of this year’s Christmas Special.

More from Doctor Who

It is indeed quite the Christmas gift to Whovians, as we will get to see River and the Twelfth Doctor meet up. This pairing certainly has a lot of potential, with the sarcastic Twelfth Doctor, who is thoroughly uncomfortable being hugged meeting the vivacious Doctor Song and her book of ‘spoilers.’ To finally get to see this pairing in action is something to truly look forward to, and will make the time until Christmas seem that much longer.

Not many details have been released for this episode, which will begin filming this week. It was written by Steven Moffat, and is set to be produced by Nikki Wilson and directed by Doctor Who and Sherlock alum Douglas Mackinnon. However, if Alex Kingston is to be trusted, this special has a lot of potential.

"“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humour and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”"

As had been the case with the rest of Series Nine, the special guests and little snippets of information for the Christmas Special will be released over the coming months. If there are any surprises like the return of River Song, then this will truly be a memorable Christmas for us all.
