After an epic two-week premiere, this week Doctor Who begins a new adventure with ‘Under the Lake,’ the first in a two-part story from writer Toby Whithouse. Now we have our best look yet at the episode’s new characters and setting, thanks to a slew of new promotional images from BBC.

It’s pretty much standard practice to expect a new image gallery for the next episode of Doctor Who the week before it airs, but the BBC have really outdone themselves this time. There were dozens of new images released today (though in fairness, some of them are just different angles of the same character). Up first, though, here’s the official synopsis for ‘Under the Lake’:
"When an underwater base comes under attack, the Doctor and Clara must save the frightened crew and defeat an impossible threat. But what is behind these terrifying events? And can they really be haunted by ghosts?"

Guest stars for the episode include Colin McFarlane, Sophie Stone, Zaqi Ismail, Morven Christie, Arsher Ali, Steven Robertson, and comedian Paul Kaye — all of whom you can see in the gallery below. This feels like a very dark, gritty adventure for the Doctor and Clara; hopefully, it’s as scary as it looks.
