Big Spoiler from Meereen: presumed-dead character in costume

Yesterday, our curiosity was piqued when Sibel Kikelli, the actress who played Shae for the first four seasons of Game of Thrones, was spotted in Peñíscola, where the show is currently filming scenes in Meereen. The last time we’d seen Shae, she’d been strangled to death by Tyrion after he discovered her in her father’s bed. Understandably, none of us really expected her to return, what with the death.
Kekelli wasn’t in costume, so a lot of people guessed she was just visiting the set. After all, she’d worked with Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) and Conleth Hill (Varys) during her time on the show, so perhaps she was just hanging out with old friends. Then today, this picture happened.
That would be Ms. Kekelli dressed in an outfit commonly worn by the former slaves of Meereen, standing near Conleth Hill, David Benioff, and Dan Weiss. I guess she could just be getting into costume for fun, but it seems more likely that she’s going to film some material. Here’s another shot of her apparently reading over a script with Dinklage.
There’s also a video to go along with that.
How is this possible? We’ve got a few theories:
- Shae somehow survived her murder and made her way to Meereen. Projected likelihood: 5%. Shae looked awfully dead in “The Children,” the Season 4 finale.
- As commenter Buffy suggested, Shae could have an identical twin who lives in Meereen. After all, Shae did hail from Essos. But, as commenter The Red Lady suggested, that idea “[s]ounds very Days of Our Lives…” Still, it’s not impossible. Projected likelihood: 10%.
- Tyrion, sick with guilt over his murder of Shae, imagines he sees her amid a crowd of former slaves, possibly with some help from alcohol. She might also appear to him in a dream. Since giving us a look into Cersei’s past in Season 5, Game of Thrones seems to be a little more open to sequences like this, and since Tyrion clearly isn’t over what he did, I can see this happening. Projected likelihood: 75%.
And of course it could be something I haven’t though of. Call that the other 10%. How do you guys think this will go down?
