Doctor Who Preview/Synopsis: ‘Before the Flood’

This week on Doctor Who, it’s time for the Doctor to head back in time and figure out what was causing all the paranormal activity in last week’s ‘Under the Lake.’

It’s also the conclusion of the second two-parter this season, and it’s interesting to compare the two stories. Despite the two-act format being repeated, the structure of the two stories is quite different. ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’/’The Witch’s Familiar’ was essentially one long story, just split into two episodes. ‘Under the Lake’/’Before the Flood’ is also one long story, but in ‘Before the Flood’ the Doctor will have traveled back in time hundreds of years, providing a different setting and providing a distinct contrast between the two episodes.

Most interestingly, we’ll finally meet the Fisher King, the fearsome alien warlord we’ve been seeing in trailers and photos since the promotions for Series 9 began. It took a small army of talent to bring him to life: Game of Thrones actor Neil Fingleton is the man in the suit, while Darth Maul vocalist Peter Serafinowicz will provide his speaking voice, and all the growls and screams he lets loose will come courtesy of Slipknot singer Corey Thompson.

Here’s the official synopsis for this week’s ‘Before the Flood’:

"On a remote Army outpost, a fearsome alien warlord – the Fisher King – sets in motion a twisted plan to ensure his own survival. The ripples will be felt around the universe. Is this chain of events inevitable? And can the Doctor do the unthinkable?"
