Filming at Mesa Roldán Begins Today, Dinklage Spotted
By Ani Bundel
Game of Thrones is rolling from place to place as its two-month filming stint in Spain draws to the end. After spending ten days in El Chorrillo, followed by a stop over yesterday in the Tabernas Desert, which according to La Voz de Almería also included Sorbas, today filming rolls to the penultimate location: Mesa Roldán.
Moreover, according to the same article, on Thursday, as the green screens went up, Peter Dinklage was seen visiting the area. He was spotted walking through the parts of the area around the tower where the railings have been removed and the asphalt covered in sand, along with the tower itself. We have been wondering which filming location the Meereenese contingent of the cast was in the area for, since clearly El Chorrillo was Dothraki territory, and all rumors said that filming in Tabernas was directly related to the El Chorrillo scenes. This was also reportedly confirmed by actor Staz Nair, who plays a Dothraki warrior, and is said to have shot scenes there with Emilia Clarke yesterday. It looks like the Tower is the answer. But where is it?
The speculation begins below!
The question really is: is theMesa Roldán functioning as a Meereenese landmark of some sort, or not? And if not, what is it for? Are Tyrion and company finding themselves run out of Meereen on a rail (or a dragon’s tail) and looking for a place of refuge? Are they heading out to meet up with the leader who abandoned them, Daenerys, Mother of Dragons, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea and Filmer of Fire Scenes?
La Voz continues to insist that filming here will only include about 40 extras, plus seven major roles. Ideal.es, on the other hand, reports that their sources say that the production has rented the local sports arena in Carboneras, because they need the capacity to handle 400 extras. If indeed this is some sort of a place of refuge for Tyrion and company, a limited number of extras would make sense. But if say, they’re planning to meet back up with Dany and finally turn their gazes towards Westeros, 400 extras would make an impressive Dothraki army for her to turn up with.
Also, who are the seven principle actors needed to film scenes here? Peter Dinkalge, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Jacob Anderson are confirmed as in the area and ready to film. If we add to that Emilia Clarke, Michiel Huisman, Iain Glen and Staz Nair, that’s seven. We’ll have to wait and see if spoilers leak and answer our questions.
