Doctor Who: Do We Really Need a K-9 Movie?
By David Hill
Given the continued popularity of Doctor Who, it is surprising that a movie has not yet come about. Yes, there have been rumors that a Doctor Who movie was discussed, yet nothing has come to fruition as of yet. It is fair to wonder if such a movie will ever occur.
Now, it appears as though the waters for a Doctor Who movie may be getting tested, if ever so slightly. One of the more iconic allies of the Doctor, K-9, is going to be headed to the big screen in the upcoming film K-9: Timequake. It certainly is exciting news, and may well be a test to see how commercially feasible a Doctor Who movie would be.
The only question is, do we really need a K-9 movie? This is not a knock on the robotic dog, but rather a matter of wondering why that ally specifically. Given the plethora of other options out there in the Whoniverse, the decision to use K-9 as that foray into the cinematic world is a bit puzzling.
While there are the concerns over continuity when it comes to a true Doctor Who movie, that does not mean that other areas of the Whoniverse could not be explored. UNIT or Torchwood would seemingly be solid options for a featured film. Add in some Daleks and maybe have Michael Bey set up plenty of explosions, and one could have a solid cinematic experience.

Yes, K-9 has a special place in the history of Doctor Who. And yes, it did make a brief reappearance with Sarah Jane during the episode ‘School Reunion’ before becoming a part of the Sarah Jane Chronicles. But is this truly where one would want to begin to explore the potential for a Doctor Who movie? K-9 has certain strengths, but enough for a film?
With all of the potential options available, why K-9? Why now? This just seems like a strange choice if this movie is, indeed, a trial run for the feasibility of a true Doctor Who film. While I’m still looking forward to seeing it, it just seems like there would have been better options than a robotic dog from deep in the history of the show for a feature film.
