Dornish scenes were definitely filmed at the Alcazaba of Almería

Filming for Game of Thrones Season 6 may have wrapped in Spain, but there are still reports coming in from the area. We’ve previously speculated that the Alcazaba of Almería, a gorgeous fortress in the southeast of Spain, would be used for scenes in Dorne, mainly based on the presence of actors like Indira Varma (Ellaria Sand), Rosabell Laurenti Sellers (Tyene Sand), and Alexander Siddig (Doran Martell) in the area. Now, Watchers on the Wall has photos that put any doubts to rest.

Notice the extras dressed in the distinctive yellow-and-black garb of Dornish soldiers. We see you, pair of Dornish soldiers on the left side of the second picture. Those bushes won’t hide you.

Anyway, this confirms what we expected: the Alcazaba of Almería will stand in for Dorne, meaning that the Dornish characters will be back in some capacity. Note, however, that the production only filmed at the Alcazaba for two days, so the Dornish will probably have a smaller presence than they did in Season 5. Also, DeObia Oparei (Areo Hotah) previously forecasted that he wouldn’t have a lot of screentime in Season 6, so I wouldn’t expect to see a whole lot of him and his cohorts come next year.

Finally, there’s still no confirmation on whether the special guests who visited the Alcazaba during filming were there for a promotional photoshoot or if they’ll play a part in the Dornish storyline (Beware: that link contains potential spoilers).

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Westeros…

That’s an overhead shot of a filming area near Corbet, Northern Ireland, where the show has been shooting scenes for the siege of Riverrun, among other things. Some readers have looked at this part of the photo…

…and pointed out that it looks like a ship in front of a green screen, which…yeah, that seems about right. A source tells us that there was shooting here recently, although it was hard to tell which actors were involved. Rumor has it that it could be Euron Greyjoy’s ship, en route to Essos. In the books, Euron captains a ship called the Silence, which has black sails. The ship in the photo does look to have black sails, so it wouldn’t surprise me if that rumor turned out to be true.
