Doctor Who: The Zygons Take Their Place Among the Great Enemies

Perhaps more than any other creature that the Doctor could face, the Zygons are the most intriguing of potential enemies. Yes, the Doctor has been able to work out treaties with them in the past, but given their shapeshifting abilities, one had to expect that they could be a truly formidable enemy if they were to get angered. Last night’s episode of Doctor Who certainly did not disappoint in that aspect.

Not only did the Zygons prove that they could be the most fearsome enemy the Doctor could face, they managed to strike close to home as well. Using their stealth and ability to change into whoever they target, the Zygons managed to capture Clara, replicating her to give ‘Bonnie,’ or Zygon Clara, the opportunity to remove the Doctor permanently.

In addition to firing that missile at the Doctor’s airplane, the Zygons have managed to either capture or neutralize Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, ambushing her in the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. The town, which is where the Doctor had thought that Osgood was being kept captive, proved to be excellent bait.

And let us not forget how the Zygons ability to shapeshift led to the destruction of an entire unit in Turmezistan. By being able to replicate the squadron’s family and friends, they were able to get a battle hardened troop to ignore their directives and be coerced into the church, where they were summarily destroyed.

More from Doctor Who

Indeed, the Zygons, if they were so inclined, could end up being the greatest threat on Doctor Who. Fortunately for the Doctor, and humanity, for that matter, the Zygons have typically been a peaceful race, attacking only when provoked. That is, until this current splinter group came in to being, proving exactly how devastating a true Zygon invasion could be.

Perhaps, should he manage to escape the missile streaking towards his plane, the Doctor will be able to recruit the more peaceful majority of Zygons to stand up to the militant branch. It may be that, in order for the Doctor to stop this enemy, he will have to hope that this group does not speak for the majority of the Zygons on Earth.

The Zygons, if they were so inclined, could be quite the formidable villains on Doctor Who. They certainly proved that the Zygons could hold their own against the Doctor, and could well give the other, more established enemies, a run for their money.
