Contestant on BBC’s Mastermind Answers Series of Song of Ice and Fire Questions

If you’ve never had the pleasure of watching BBC Two’s Mastermind, it’s a show where contestants answer a series of questions based in part on a specialized subject area of their choosing, and then from a general pool of questions. It’s like Who Wants to be a Millionaire but much smarter, and without the possibility of winning a million dollars. Or, it’s like Are You Smarter Than a 5th…oh, nevermind—I refuse to insult the intelligence of our neighbors across the pond.

On this particular episode, host John Humphrys gets to muddle through some queerly pronounced Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire questions, as one the contestants—Joe Errington—is a self-proclaimed Song of Ice and Fire expert, and chose to get grilled about the series. The Song of Ice and Fire line of questions starts around 1:35.

First of all, Joe did really well. As far as the name of the cook in the House of Black and White, I was yelling “OOTHMA,” so I was off by a few letters (her real name is Umma). Also, our host Mr. Humphrys seems to pronounce Janos Slynt as “Yanos” and Arya as “Aria.” And finally, there was no way I would have been able to name the ship Quentyn Martell sailed on to Meereen: the Adventure.

On a side note, Joe gets asked a question about cockles and mussels in the general knowledge section. All I could think of was Arya pushing a barrow through Braavos and yelling “Oysters, Clams, and Cockles!” so I most certainly would have answered that question incorrectly, as well.

Sadly, our fellow Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire expert did not win, coming in third with 16 points. But hey, at least he did well in his area of expertise.
