Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi to Depart After Series Ten?

facebooktwitterreddit

Nothing truly lasts forever on Doctor Who. The characters are constantly changing, as companions come and go while the Doctor regenerates on a somewhat frequent basis. It is this constant change which helps make Doctor Who such a compelling show, as nothing is ever static. Yet, the more that things change, the more they remain the same.

These constant changes, however, can cause a bit of an issue when it comes to the Doctor. As we saw last season, it can take some time for the new Doctor to truly be comfortable in the role, and for the writing to become accustomed to the mannerisms of the new actor. Sometimes, it takes longer than it should, but when everything finally clicks, it is truly special.

That is what we have now with Peter Capaldi. The Twelfth Doctor has become his own, and Series Nine, despite a few minor complaints, has been one of the best seasons in quite some time. This is exactly what everyone had hoped for when it was announced that Capaldi would be taking on the role.

Unfortunately, that constant change is rearing it’s head once again. Not only is Clara leaving by the end of the season, getting killed off in a way where she will not return, but Capaldi may be leaving shortly thereafter. Capaldi admitted to being told that next season may well be his last in the TARDIS, as a change may be coming after Series Ten.

  • Even though the average shelf life for the Doctor seems to be between three to four seasons, having Capaldi in the role for just three seasons just seems to be too short of a time. Perhaps this is because his first season was seemingly spent as a background character in the show, given the focus on Clara and his struggles to find himself. Now, with Capaldi truly becoming the Doctor, he deserves the time to fully explore the path for the Twelfth Doctor.

At some point, we all know that his journey will end. Capaldi will depart the TARDIS for one last time, eventually regenerating into his successor. This era, just like every other, will come to an end, and someone else will become the Thirteenth Doctor. But that does not mean that the ending should come this soon.

The rumors are already beginning that Peter Capaldi will be departing from Doctor Who. Hopefully, this will not be the case, and he will be around for more than Series Ten.
