Alex Kingston is in tune with what many fans of Doctor Who and Torchwood want.
Doctor Who has spawned its fair share of spin-off television programs. These include Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, K-9, and the upcoming Class. Over the years, there have also been quite a few other proposed ideas, which were ultimately scrapped. One of these was Rose Tyler: Earth Defence about Rose’s life with the Meta-Crisis Doctor in the alternate universe. Personally, I would have loved for that to have been produced, but it is unlikely to ever happen. If we are really lucky, however, a recent comment from Alex Kingston could become reality (though, I’m not holding my breath).
Kingston recently talked with Digital Spy regarding how she thinks the character of River Song should be presented on Doctor Who:
"“I think the beauty of a character like River Song is that she’ll come in for an adventure and then she goes off again, and I think that’s what the fans love. If she were a constant companion, I’m not sure the fans would enjoy that so much – and it would take away the opportunity for someone else to become the companion.”"
I agree with Kingston’s sentiment. But it is what she had to say about a hypothetical spin-off that had me squeeing with Whovian glee:
"“After the 9 o’clock watershed? With Captain Jack? Might be naughty!”"

Can you imagine? What a perfectly fantastic solution for the fans who have been yearning for a) Captain Jack Harkness and Professor River Song to meet and b) for
Torchwood
to come back to television. The somewhat disastrous Series Four of
Torchwood
could be left in the dust in favor of a brand new program filled with sexy adventures across time and space! It would finally provide the platform that River needs to show the true depth of her character, just as
Torchwood
did with Jack. And, of course, they would have to include Agent Gwen Cooper. Alternately, River could join up with the Torchwood team over at Big Finish.

We at Doctor Who Watch even have two articles suggesting a River Song Spin-off — one focussing on her adventures with the Doctor and one about her other exploits. What do you think of a spin-off starring River Song and Jack Harkness? What other spin-offs would you like to see? Let us know in the comments.
