The steamrolling of award nominations for Game of Thrones Season 5 continues apace. Last time it was the Writers Guild Awards, and this time it’s the Producers Guild Awards (PGAs). The Producers Guild of America announced the 27th annual PGA Awards nominations yesterday, and once again, HBO’s flagship show made the cut. It only earned one nomination, but the PGAs are a small affair with only a handful of categories to speak of (unlike the Emmys, where the awards nominations go on for pages and pages). In the five categories dedicated to television, Game of Thrones qualifies for “The Norman Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Drama.” This will be the fifth year running the show has been nominated in that category.
Unfortunately, it may also be the fifth loss. Game of Thrones may been nominated every season it’s been on the air, but it’s also been roundly beaten every year as well. It’s lost to Breaking Bad the last two years. Before that, it lost to Homeland and Boardwalk Empire. This year, the show is up against Homeland again, plus House of Cards. There’s also the show that seems to be filling all the old Breaking Bad slots, Better Call Saul, as well as Mad Men, which ended it’s run this past Spring.
If I had to bet what show Game of Thrones will lose to this year, I’d put my money on Mad Men. But then again, I also predicted the Emmys would all go to Mad Men over Game of Thrones this year, and well, we all saw how that turned out. Don’t count your awards until they are announced!
Elsewhere, Game of Thrones has picked up several award nominations from the Screen Actors Guild, including:
- Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series: Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
- Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series: Game of Thrones
- Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series: Game of Thrones
In the stunt category, Game of Thrones is up against shows like Homeland, Daredevil, and The Walking Dead. I’d think the stunt team that coordinated the action scene in “Hardhome” would put them over the top, but we’ll see. Competitors for the ensemble award include the casts of Homeland, House of Cards, Mad Men, and Downton Abbey, while Dinklage is going up against the likes of Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), and dark horse entrant Rami Malek (Mr. Robot).
The SAG awards will be given out on January 30. Best of luck to all, but, y’know, more luck to those involved with Game of Thrones.
