Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi Wants to Guest Star on Class
By Leah Tedesco
It is yet unknown to us whether or not Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi will appear on the spin-off, Class, but he would like to.
"“I’m sure that might be fun, yes, but nobody’s asked me yet!” – Peter Capaldi"
Digital Spy reported last month that, while Peter Capaldi had not yet read any of the scripts for Class, the Doctor Who spin-off series, he feels that it would “be nice if the Doctor did show up from time to time.” This is something with which I agree. When a show has one or more spin-offs, it is always an exciting treat when the source material is referenced, especially when characters pop in every now and then. It was cool when the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, respectively, guest starred on a few episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures, a show for young adults, which will also be the target demographic for Class. As for Torchwood, having Martha Jones make an appearance was fantastic. It is rather odd, however, that, other than his preserved hand, the Doctor never once appeared on the show. Other than the hand, all we had was the offscreen sound of the TARDIS, and Jack running to catch it.
As for Class, it is set at Coal Hill School, which has been around since the beginning of Doctor Who. From the very first episode, ‘An Unearthly Child,’ in 1963, it was established that both companions Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright were teachers there, and the Doctor’s granddaughter, Susan Foreman, was a student. Sadly, Jacqueline Hill is no longer with us to return as Barbara Chesterton (she and Ian married), but William Russell and Carole Ann Ford could conceivably make appearances as Ian and Susan, respectively. Fans have long wanted to see them return to the Whoniverse. Or, if you prefer your guest stars to be more obscure, they could bring in Barbara and Ian’s son, John Alydon Ganatus Chesterton aka Johnny Chess.

Over the decades of the program, occasional stories have taken place either at Coal Hill School, or involving its staff and students. Clara Oswald also eventually became a teacher there during the Eleventh Doctor’s run, and that is where she met fellow teacher Danny Pink. In ‘The Caretaker,’ the Twelfth Doctor spent time there, undercover as a caretaker, setting a trap for an alien threat. In that episode, he got to know student Courtney Woods a bit. He also got acquainted with some of the students in ‘In the Forest of the Night‘ and ‘Kill the Moon.’ Speaking of the students, I wonder if any of the ones who have appeared on Doctor Who will also do so on Class. I am particularly hoping to see Courtney again, as her character is compelling.
With all of these things in mind, it would seem natural for the Doctor to return to Coal Hill School. The big question is what will happen now that he cannot remember Clara?
