Doctor Who: The Reset is Likely to be Coming

A new companion is coming, and a new showrunner will be joining the show in 2018. Get ready folks, the Doctor Who reboot is likely to be coming.

Let us take a trip back in time to the end of Series Four of Doctor Who. Donna Noble had her memory wiped to save her life, but that resulted in her no longer being able to travel with the Doctor. There were several specials, at the end of which both David Tennant and Russell T Davies departed from the show. it was a time of transition, where quite a number of changes needed to take place.

Those changes certainly did occur. While it was still Doctor Who, Series Five had a vastly different feel. Matt Smith brought a different presence to the Doctor, where he was far less serious and a lot more unsure of himself. Amy Pond, and later Rory, were quite different than Donna and Martha Jones. Moffat, for better or worse, made the show his own, changing the overall tone on Doctor Who.

Now, these changes will be occurring once more. A new companion will be boarding the TARDIS next season, and Moffat will be replaced by Chris Chibnall in time for 2018. The times, they are achanging once again.

More from Doctor Who

With the new faces coming to the show, it is the perfect time for another soft reboot to happen. Even though such a reboot would not fundamentally change the show, the overall tone and feel of the program may be vastly different. Although the past season of Doctor Who may have been the best of the new incarnation, those changes are likely to occur.

Just as Moffat put his own stamp on the show, Chibnall will likely do the same. Even though, like Moffat, Chibnall is a lifelong fan, his vision of what Doctor Who should be is going to be different. These differences, whether they are subtle or major, will still lead to a different show than what we have become accustomed to.

Change is constant on Doctor Who, and quite a few changes will happen in the coming years. As such, that reboot, which happened the last time a new showrunner came on board, appears destined to occur once again.
