A compilation of various recent Doctor Who news from around the internet for January 25th, 2016
Netflix is reportedly dropping Doctor Who from their US streaming catalogue as of February 1st, 2016. This news comes at an especially dreadful time for Whovians, considering that there will not be any new episodes until the 2016 Christmas special. As far as I know, the show will still be available on Hulu Plus during this time, but that does not help individuals who do not subscribe to that service. This time last year, Netflix announced plans to drop the show, but the enormous outcry prevented them from doing so. Most of the petitions from back then are closed. I did, however, find and sign one that is still open. Let us know if you are able to locate any others.
In a recent interview with Juliette Boland of the Timey Wimey Show, Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith had some lovely things to say in response to Steven Moffat soon being replaced by Chris Chibnall as showrunner of Doctor Who. You can watch the video below the quoted text.
"I’m sad he’s leaving Doctor Who. I think he’s done so much for it and so much for me. . . . He pretty much is Doctor Who, but, you know, the show will always endure. There’s a wonderful writer coming in. . . . As always, it’s about the sort of regeneration and the reinvention of things. But [Moffat] has done so much for the show, and I just feel very privileged that I got to work with what I think is, you know, the greatest writer — one of the greatest writers to have been involved in that show. . . . It’s sad to see him go, but, you know, I’m excited to see what he does next."

In contrast to Smith and Boland’s sentiments, there are
Doctor Who
fans who are thrilled to see Moffat step down as showrunner. In a complete

, they found a grand total of two tweets from fans who do not understand Moffat’s writing and are thus glad that he is leaving. Granted, I have seen many fans express their elation regarding this changing of the guard, but I have also seen fans express sadness. It is also possible to have a more nuanced opinion on the matter (as one of the aforementioned tweets actually reflects). Personally, while I largely understand his writing and enjoy much of his work, I have had some issues with his time as showrunner. My final verdict is that it is time for him to move on and, echoing Smith, it will be interesting to see his future projects.
What do Doctor Who alumni do during the cancellations of conventions and flights? Why, take to the internet, of course! John Barrowman was preparing in his hotel for Heroes & Villains Fan Fest, New Jersey when it was (mostly) cancelled due to a blizzard. The weather was so bad that he was stranded there. In true Barrowman fashion, he turned an otherwise boring incident into a celebration (complete with videos), braving the elements, and hanging out in the hotel and a restaurant with his entourage and fans. He teased us with talk of a slumber party, stripping (poker related and otherwise), and a musical number called “Put the Parcel in the Poke.” For more footage of the event, check out more of his facebook videos.
Ingrid Oliver enlisted her Twitter followers to help her pass the time during a five hour wait in an airport after her flight was cancelled. She initiated a spirited game of #movieswithairlinesinthetitle, foraged for food, (probably) enjoyed some adult beverages, and was soothed by the Top Gun soundtrack.
