It is rare that a companion shows up again after their time aboard the TARDIS on Doctor Who. It is even rarer for that former companion to travel with the Doctor again. Perhaps it is time for that to change.
Over the years, when companions leave the Doctor behind and both parties go on their separate ways, it is rare for them to cross paths again. Yes, the Doctor met Martha Jones as a member of UNIT after their travels, and saw Rose as Bad Wolf, but their travels were over. Sarah Jane had one last journey with the Doctor, decades after the fact, but she is the exception to the rule that the companions do not have another journey on Doctor Who.
Now, with a new companion set to take their place alongside the Doctor, perhaps it is time for that to change. There have been companions who have not had their fair shake, due to the Doctor’s own self-pity or for other mitigating circumstances. Maybe now, with a confident, self assured Twelfth Doctor hitting his stride, it is time to change that.

In fact, it would be a great time to bring Martha back (perhaps with her husband, Mickey). Of all the companions, particularly in the new incarnation of Doctor Who, she may have had the worst timing. After losing Rose, The Tenth Doctor brought her along on the TARDIS, only to pine over his lost companion and to ignore Martha’s presence. It is not a surprise that she eventually got fed up and departed, after undertaking a tremendous effort to remind everyone of the Doctor, bringing him back to foil the Master’s plans.
With the Tenth Doctor being unable to appreciate what he had, Doctor Who lost a strong, self confident companion who had the courage and determination to stand beside the Doctor on his adventures. The show lost a truly intelligent person, one who not only would be able to hold their own bantering, but be able to understand and properly execute whatever plans the Doctor created. In short, it seems that Martha Jones is exactly the type of companion that the Twelfth Doctor would be looking for.
If ever it would be fitting to rewrite the script, it would be in this case. Martha could get to enjoy her travels with someone that would appreciate her, and the Doctor would be secure in knowing that he has another companion that would be able to understand and execute his plans. It certainly sounds like a scenario that would be mutually beneficial.

If Steven Moffat wanted to create an interesting dynamic as he was leaving Doctor Who, bringing back Martha Jones as the companion once again would certainly count. This time, she may well get a fair chance to show how good of a companion she could have been.
