Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi Says that the New Companion Will Likely Be Announced “Fairly Soon”

After a maddening amount of silence on the topic, there may be an announcement as to who the next companion on Doctor Who will be in the near future.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the upcoming series of Doctor Who is the identity of the next companion. With Jenna Coleman’s departure, there is quite the void aboard the TARDIS, and the upcoming wholesale changes on the show, knowing who the next companion will be would be a great start to imagining what Series Ten could be like.

According to none other than Peter Capaldi, in an exclusive interview with Huw Fullerton at Radio Times, we may not have to wait much longer for that announcement. Not only is he saying that he wants more diversity amongst the companions on the show, but an announcement could occur shortly.

More from Doctor Who

Even with the idea that an announcement will happen in the near future, there is still plenty of speculation, not only to the identity of the upcoming companion, but as to when they will appear for the first time. Capaldi stated that, due to the storyline set up for his next companion, that they may not appear in the Christmas Special coming later this year, instead making their debut in 2017.

Yes, Capaldi really did not provide much information, but the nuggets he did put forth are quite interesting. His goal, to have a companion that reflects the diversity of England and to provide a more “working class voice,” certainly make for an interesting combination.

It also maybe that Capaldi is having a bit of a say as to who the next companion will be. As he was asked to remain on Doctor Who beyond this upcoming season, it could be that getting him someone who he feels is the best representation of what the companion should be is a step towards attempting to keep him as a part of the show. Obviously, the new companion has earned the job based on their own merits, but being able to be a part of Capaldi’s vision for the role may certainly have helped.
