Okay then! I’m sure we’ll be picking apart the trailer for days to come, but let’s make some cursory observations:

  • The song is “Wicked Game,” covered by James Vincent McMorrow. I’m always a little put off by the production’s choice to use modern music in these trailers, but somehow it usually fits.
  • Right at the top, we see Jon Snow’s dead body. “He’s gone.” Okay, we get it.
  • 0.13: Jaime looks like he’s making some major apologies to Cersei after coming home to King’s Landing with their daughter’s body in tow.
  • 0:23: People who have been paying attention to spoilers can probably guess what’s going on with the flayed man burning on a cross while an army looks on. Also, I’m uncharacteristically moved by Melisandre’s broken tone of voice. After suffering a huge defeat, this is the first time we’ve heard her rattled.
  • 0:30: As WiC writer David Harris put it: “Jorah the Explorer found Dany’s ring.” And let’s not forget he’s carrying that nasty greyscale.
  • 0:37: Based on the hooves of the horse statue in the foreground, Dany is definitely going back to Vaes Dothrak, the only permanent city of the Dothraki. We’ve seen that statute before. The budget’s increased quite a bit since Season 1, though, hence the mass of CGI-created extras.
  • 0:44: A brief look at what appears to be the Iron Islands, with kraken flags.
  • 0:46: Tyrion, as a picture of Sansa flashes on the screen: “You’re in the great game now.” Yeah, that’s what we thought last year. Withholding judgment until we see it.
  • 0:59: It’s a bit of a corny one-liner, but I still got a little chill from Cersei’s “I choose violence.” C’mon, that’s fun! Cersei’s anything but broken and now she has a giant mutant soldier to do her bidding.
  • 1:00: It’s hard to be sure, but I’m betting this group of warriors is about to fight in the shadow of the Tower of Joy. The brief flash of fighting at 1:16 also looks like it’s from the Tower of Joy fight.
  • 1:04: I can’t quite make out the markings on the sails of those ships. Is the Iron Fleet on the move?
  • 1:08: That is unmistakably the door being blown off the room in a pyramid in Meereen. Big trouble for someone.
  • 1:12: A shot of Melisandre disrobing, and then a shot of Jon Snow’s dead body. Hm.
  • 1:14: The amazing flying Arya! Looks like we’ll get some parkour action in Braavos.
  • 1:18: This shot of Margaery and the High Sparrow very neatly matches that of Cersei and the High Sparrow from last season.
  • 1:21: Bran sees the Night’s King. That’s from one of his visions, surely.
  • 1:35: That last shot has a lot going on. Davos is pulling Longclaw next to Jon Snow’s dead body, a couple of Night’s Watchmen also seem to be pulling their weapons, and Ghost is lying near his dead master. Interesting.

Like I said, stay tuned for lots more analysis.
