Amazon has teamed up with the BBC to exclusively stream Doctor Who to audiences in the United States.
After the vague news from the end of February of Doctor Who coming to Amazon Prime Video in March, an official press release was sent out today from The OutCast Agency with more details.
"Doctor Who fans rejoice… the BBC global phenomenon is headed back to Prime Video. Today, Amazon and BBC announced a multi-year content licensing agreement to make Prime Video the exclusive U.S. subscription streaming home for the award-winning modern version of the science-fiction series Doctor Who."
Seasons one through eight, plus the Christmas specials, will appear on Amazon Prime Video on Sunday, March 27th. Season nine, plus ‘The Husbands of River Song,’ will be available in the Fall of 2016. There will be no extra charge to subscribers for this program.
Doctor Who will be able to be streamed on televisions with the Amazon Video app, connected devices including Amazon Fire TV and mobile devices, and online. It will also be available to download on Fire devices, iPads, iPhones, and Android phones and tablets for offline viewing.

Is this a reason to rejoice? Well, a limited one, perhaps. Not only is this not good news for Whovians who only subscribe to Netflix and/or Hulu and lost streaming access to the show on those services, but Classic Who is not being provided by any of the three. Personally, I subscribe to both Netflix and Hulu, but not Amazon Prime. I am on a tight budget and am not willing to give up Netflix or Hulu in favor of Amazon Prime because the former two have a lot of other exclusive content that I watch. Doctor Who is not the only franchise in the world.
If you do not yet subscribe to Amazon Prime and think that it might be worth checking out, they offer a thirty day free trial.
