Can’t draw? Create your own Doctor Who comics using templates with the Doctor Who: Comic Creator App!
Last year, we posted an article titled ‘Doctor Who Web Comics.’ It featured some of the best fan-created Doctor Who comics from around the web. There certainly are a lot of excellent ones out there. While most of us do not have the talent or time to create our own from scratch, there is now an official BBC app for iPhone, iPad, and Android that is the next best thing.
Doctor Who: Comic Creator lets you use templates to create your own virtual custom comic strips or even books by mixing and matching various Doctor Who Doctors, characters, creatures (of which you can make hybrids in the Monster Maker), props, settings, layouts, speech/thought/text bubbles and boxes, sounds, special effects, and fact files! In other words, it is more or less Bitstrips for Doctor Who. What is disappointing, however, is that there does not seem to be an easy way to share your creations. You could do a screencap, but that would not include the interactive sounds and special effects. Despite having had smart phones for quite a few years, this is something with which I still struggle with screencaps, anyway. Hopefully sharing is a feature that they will add to the app soon.
There are editing tools to resize, flip, rotate, and layer things. I have been playing around with the app on my Android phone and find the user interface of these particular tools to be a bit awkward, but still fairly manageable.

While the app is free to download, some of the templates have to be unlocked through pack purchases, with more content added each month. The first pack is free with the initial download, but there are very few characters. The only free ones are the Twelfth and Eleventh Doctors and Clara. The other Doctors are locked, as are Amy, Rory, River, Rose, Donna, Martha, Susan, and K9. I do not know who they will add next, but it would make sense for them to include Jack and Sarah Jane. Packs two and three cost $1.99 each, or $2.99 as a bundle. Pack four is coming soon. The app also includes a free sample comic book titled A Stitch in Time, featuring the Twelfth Doctor and Clara.
