Doctor Who: Queen Victoria and Clara Oswald
By Leah Tedesco
Jenna Coleman will be playing a young Queen Victoria in an upcoming miniseries on ITV. Considering this, it is naturally easy to make mental connections to Doctor Who.
There has been a lot of excitement recently surrounding Jenna Coleman’s upcoming eight-episode ITV miniseries Victoria, starring Coleman as the lead. The series will focus on the early life of Queen Victoria, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, from her accession to the throne at the age of eighteen in 1837, through her marriage to Prince Albert, played by Tom Hughes.

Of course, Whovians know Coleman best for her role as Clara Oswald on Doctor Who. What is interesting to consider is how Coleman’s portrayal of Queen Victoria connects to both Clara and the Queen Victoria of the Whoniverse. First, consider that Clara, as the Impossible Girl, was the Doctor’s protector over the course of his life. Then factor in that Queen Victoria founded the Torchwood Institute in the Tenth Doctor episode ‘Tooth and Claw‘ to keep an eye on the Doctor, and protect her kingdom from his actions. These are two sides of the same coin.
So, now that we have Coleman as the face of the young Queen, it is easy to imagine the monarch as one of the many splinter versions of Clara scattered throughout history. It would add to the rich tapestry of wibbly wobbly connections in the world of Doctor Who. This is a fanciful fan notion, of course, but imagine the excitement if the writers at Doctor Who decided to give a passing wink and a nod to this theory. This could range from something as simple as a painting or line of dialogue, to an appearance from Jenna Coleman and/or Pauline Collins, who previously portrayed Queen Victoria on Doctor Who.
Other actors from the Doctor Who family who will be appearing on Victoria are Eve Myles, Adrian Schiller, Tommy Knight, and Nichola McAuliffe.
Victoria will air on ITV later this year and PBS in 2017.
