Doctor Who’s Michelle Gomez Nominated for BAFTA Award
By David Hill
Since her introduction on Doctor Who, Missy immediately became a fan favorite to many due to her charm and entertaining relationship with the Doctor. Michelle Gomez’s performance has been recognized by BAFTA, as well.
When Michelle Gomez appeared during Series Eight, her mysterious character was the buzz of Doctor Who. Who was Missy, and why was she spying on the Doctor? When it was revealed that she was the Master regenerated, and we all got to see her delightfully evil persona, and the playful way she toyed with her nemesis.
Series Nine started off with a bang, with Missy and Clara joining forces to locate the Doctor and to work their way through Skaro to get the Doctor from Davros’ clutches. Naturally, there was the inevitable double cross, as she attempted to get the Doctor to kill the Dalek shell housing Clara, but that was to be expected. In the end, Missy escaped, ready to once again plague the Doctor during his travels.

That excellent performance by Gomez is being recognized by more than the fans of Doctor Who. She was nominated for a BAFTA award for the Best Supporting Actress, competing against Chanel Cresswell, Eleanor Worthington-Cox and Lesley Manville for the honor. While her competition may well be fine actresses in their own right, watching Gomez become Missy would be difficult to beat.
It would certainly be great to see Gomez take home the award, and to see her appear on the show once again in Series Ten. With all the upcoming changes, a new companion and a potentially different feel to the show, letting the Doctor face his frenemy once again will help add a sense of continuity. And besides, it would be a perfect excuse to see Gomez dazzle us again.
Doctor Who fans will certainly be pulling for Michelle Gomez to win this award. Hopefully, she will return to the show for Series Ten as well.
