Doctor Who: Next Companion Likely to be Female, Again

The more things change on Doctor Who, the more they stay the same. At least, that is the case when it comes to the companions.

Over the time since Doctor Who has returned to the air, the Doctor’s companion has been essentially the same. While they may have looked different, the Doctor has typically travelled with a young female companion. And while there are expected changes to the companion for Series Ten, Peter Capaldi hinted that the look will essentially be the same.

So much for the dreams of a male companion who is neither a romantic interest for the current companion, nor someone who comes and goes at random. However, Capaldi did mention that this companion will be a bit different, as she will be someone without prior knowledge of him. She will also be more questioning of his actions, and will not take him seriously.

More from Doctor Who

From what Capaldi said, there will at least be that change. Instead of the companion fawning over the Doctor and following his orders blindly, this companion seems more inclined to put him in his place and help him realize that the Universe does not revolve around him and his whims. In fact, this companion sounds like she could well be the second coming of Donna Noble.

This would certainly be a welcome change. Donna had helped the Tenth Doctor get over his pining over Rose, and also put him in his place by being rather harsh to him when he started to put himself ahead of the rest of the Universe. She was exactly what the Doctor needed at the time, and helped shape him during his next incarnation.

That may be the same type of companion that the Twelfth Doctor needs at this point. Although the circumstances have changed, and the Doctor cannot recall Clara, he will know that something is missing. He may well pine over something, even if he does not know what. This new companion, if she is to be another Doctor, may well snap him out of that funk quickly.

Yet, even with this change, the companion may well be something we have already seen in the new incarnation of Doctor Who. After all, the more things change….
