Doctor Who: A Peek Into Matt Smith’s Mind
By Leah Tedesco
At Wizard World St. Louis 2016, Matt Smith of Doctor Who revealed some interesting personal preferences during the question and answer session with fans.
As I was listening to the audio/watching the footage from the question and answer session with Matt Smith at Wizard World St. Louis 2016, I realized more than ever just how intriguing a person he is. The following are a few highlights that my brain pieced together.
I first observed that Smith seems to like things at least a bit rough.
"Fan: What was your favorite River Song scene to shoot with Alex Kingston?More from Doctor WhoNcuti Gatwa’s Doctor Who Christmas special is a “complete reinvention”Ncuti Gatwa is “so nervous” to take on Doctor Who roleThe Doctor and Donna are better than ever in “Wild Blue Yonder”Take the Black: House of the Dragon season 2 trailer hints, the Fallout show, and moreJodie Whittaker didn’t pick up on any of the hate for her version of the DoctorSmith: Haha! God, that’s a good question! . . . There’s two scenes, basically. There’s the scene in ‘The Impossible Astronaut’ where she slaps me and I go into frame — and Alex Kingston doesn’t just slap you, she like clubhands you. And after like take ten, I’m like, “Just like maybe take it easy.” She’s like “Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I will, I will, will.” And then she’d hit me and go, “Oh, god! I did it really hard again!” Um, and I don’t know why, but sadistically that was fun, but, um… Uh, that was good."
Note that he means “masochistically,” unless he is talking about it from Kingston’s perspective.
On to the snogging!
"Fan: During your time as the Doctor, who were the better kissers, the men or the women?Smith: You’ve all seen it. Arthur Darvill is the most sensational snogger. So, it might be between Arthur and Alex, I think. Um… Arthur [unintelligible].Moderator: Did you prank him, as well?Smith: Yeah, I used to wind Arthur up like do stuff in the middle of the scene. I’d just kiss him. He’d be like, “What are you doing?” “Kissing you, Arthur. I’m kissing you. Now go and die! Again!”"
While this leg of Wizard World came before David Tennant cosplaying as the Twelfth Doctor at Wizard World NYC 2016, Smith told of his own Doctor Who cosplay preferences:
"Fan: If you were to dress as any character from Doctor Who, who or what would you be?Smith: I don’t know. That’s a good question.Moderator: Vastra.Smith: Hehehe… Strax [jokingly]… I always think the Silence look pretty cool for a monster. But, you know, I mean without the head. Or a Silurian or something.Fan (regarding the Silence): Just like an alien-like body. That’s it?Smith: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don’t know. I’d go for the Silence, or River Song. She gets like cool guns and stuff, doesn’t she?Fan: She’s the fiercest.Smith: Yeah.Fan: She rocks.Smith: She does rock… the old ball and chain."
Considering his feelings about the slap, that last comment could have a much deeper meaning than is traditionally known — and he likes to switch things up with some role reversal, which is also evidenced by his answer to the following question:
"Fan: This is kind of a similar question, but if you could play in the show any character in Doctor Who other than the Doctor, who would you play?Smith: Good question. Probably the Master, I think. I always think it’d be really fun to see, you know, the Doctor sort of just flip totally to the dark side of that. . . . Also, the Dream Lord was quite a cool character. Kinda liked him. Um, yeah, but I’d go for the Master."
