Doctor Who: When Peter Capaldi Met Pearl Mackie

We have all been in a situation where we had to pretend that we did not know someone, be it whether we wanted to be left alone or because the previous meeting would make the social interaction awkward. The same circumstances happened with Doctor Who co-stars Pearl Mackie and Peter Capaldi.

Imagine being Peter Capaldi for a minute. It must be difficult to get a night out to yourself, to just enjoy a drink, or to go to a local theatre to watch a show without being recognized. While being on Doctor Who can open a great many doors, it can also be a bit of a burden to be able to just go out and relax.

It must also be difficult when you are about to “meet” someone whom you know will be joining you on a project in the future. Such was the case when Capaldi went to see a showing of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at the Gielgud Theatre in April. He was invited backstage to meet the cast, which just so happened to include his future companion, Pearl Mackie.

As Capaldi said, this would be a true test of both his and Mackie’s acting skills. He knew she had the role as the next companion, but since the announcement had yet to come down, neither could say anything. They had to pretend as though they were meeting for the first time, doing their best not to give anything away about how they would be working together in the near future.

They certainly appeared to have played their respective parts well. Mackie was not even in the conversation as the next companion until a wager was placed on her, tipping people off that not only had she auditioned for the role, but that she would be joining Capaldi onboard the TARDIS.

It can be very awkward having to pretend not to know someone that you already met. As it turned out, both Capaldi and Mackie did a great job of acting while not on the set.
