Doctor Who: The Quest to be a Good Man

Whether or not the Doctor was a good man was the underlying storyline in Series Eight of Doctor Who. However, that question never seems far from his mind.

We all remember in Series Eight of Doctor Who, when the Doctor asked Clara if he was a good man or not. When she could not answer in the affirmative, it seemed as though it actually distressed the Doctor; after all, he had devoted his lives to attempting to save the universe. How could he not be a good man if that is the case?

Last season, we saw the Doctor make attempts to be a better person. He had Clara help him through various social situations, and even created flash cards to help him remember what to say in difficult situations. Perhaps it was due to Clara’s influence, but he was making an attempt.

Since that question has seemingly been in the back of the Twelfth Doctor’s mind throughout his tenure, it may well be asked again in Series Ten. Now with Bill being introduced as the next companion, the Doctor will now have a new set of eyes watching his every move during the upcoming season. Will her outlook help the Doctor to finally answer this question?

In a way, the answer may no longer matter. The Doctor is now comfortable with himself, and while he has attempted to be better with humanity, he is still a relatively crotchety fellow and one that will never be confused as being overly friendly. Yet, he has put in an effort to change the way he acts towards those people he is trying to save, perhaps realizing that in order to be the Doctor he feels he needs to be.
