Last year, Tourism Ireland mounted a series of Game of Thrones-themed stunts that delighted fans and raised the profile of Northern Ireland, where much of the series is filmed. This year, the agency has gotten more ambitious and mounted the GoT Territory campaign. It’s taken wood from two fallen trees along the Dark Hedges—a Northern Irish landmark that stood in for the Kingsroad on the show—and made a series of beautifully engraved doors, each of which tells the story of a different episode of Game of Thrones Season 6. It’ll then house each door in a pub in Northern Ireland, which will eventually climax in an epic Game of Thrones pub crawl.
This week’s door is, as per usual, beautiful, and features several striking designs. This one might be the most upsetting: what looks like a direwolf being run through with swords. RIP Shaggydog.
Death came to Winterfell in “Oathbreaker,” and the artists who worked on these doors brought that fact home with this image. There’s something about the tactile nature of these doors that really reinforces the darkness of this story.
And then some of the designs are just awesome, like this elaborate Greyjoy kraken.
The Three-Eyed Raven pokes in on the side of the door, seeing all.
Here’s a wide shot of the door, which is currently housed at the Percy French in County Down, Northern Ireland.
Tourism Ireland is also producing a number of limited edition Game of Thrones-themed stamps in conjunction with the Royal Mail. They’re only available in Northern Ireland, which is too bad, because I would love to mark some birthday cards up with these babies. Last week, the stamp spotlighted House Bolton. This week, the Greyjoys get the stamp treatment.
We’ll be bringing you information about Tourism Ireland’s campaign throughout Season 6.
