Gareth David-Lloyd is best known for his portrayal of Ianto Jones on Torchwood (this year marking its ten year anniversary), but there is certainly more to his entertainment career than just that. For example, a couple of years into the Doctor Who spin-off’s run, he began doing voiceovers for video games. He began working in this particular industry in 2008 by doing the voice for Ianto in the BBC’s (now defunct) web-based Torchwood Mission Game and later branched out to other franchises: Adam Hale in Red Faction Armageddon (2011) and Solas in Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014) and Dragon Age: Inquisition – Trespasser (2015).

Continuing in this vein, David-Lloyd will be hosting the 2016 British Academy Cymru Games Award (why is it not “Awards”?) ceremony on Saturday, June 18th at the Wales Games Development Show, Tramshed, Cardiff. Quite appropriately for the occasion, Doctor Who Game Maker by the BBC and Aardman Animations is one of the nominees.

More from Doctor Who

David-Lloyd says that he is “thrilled to have been asked to host” considering all of the years that he has “been providing voiceovers to the games industry in Wales and the UK.” With “a clear growth in the games industry [there], over a very short time” and “more companies creating fantastic games across a variety of platforms every year,” he is “looking forward to getting [his] hands on the games at the Wales Games Development Show and testing them out for [himself].”

If a 2014 report by Nesta is any indication of current trends, David-Lloyd is certainly correct about the state of the industry. At the time, there were “1,902 games businesses in the UK” whose economic value was “as much as £1.72 billion.” This was “double the official estimates for 2011 and 2012” and shows a growth of 22% year on year.
