Envisioning a Doctor Who/Keeping Up Appearances Crossover

Based on these highly amusing fan-created mashup videos, Doctor Who/Keeping Up Appearances may be the crossover which we never realized that we needed.

Yesterday, Katie Baillie at Metro News posted an article in which she shared two mashup videos from 2008 created by Youtube user doctorwhofan6308. In these videos, Hyacinth Bucket from the 1990s British sitcom Keeping Up Appearances has phone conversations with companions from Doctor Who, one with Donna Noble and the other with Rose Tyler. There is an additional one with Martha Jones, but Baillie did not share it for some reason. You can watch all three brilliant creations below:

With all of the many actors over the decades who have appeared on both programs, the most notable one is arguably Clive Swift, who played Richard Bucket, Hyacinth’s husband on Keeping Up Appearances, and Mr. Copper in the 2007 Doctor Who episode ‘Voyage of the Damned,’ as well as Jobel in Parts One and Two of the 1985 story ‘Revelation of the Daleks.’ Richard and Mr. Copper are very similar in demeanor and are both sympathetic characters.

With everything above in mind — plus the fact that Young Hyacinth, a Keeping Up Appearances prequel one-off special will be airing this summer on BBC One — the perfect storm is being created for a crossover between KUA and Doctor Who. If nothing else, the comedic factor alone of observing Hyacinth interact with the Twelfth Doctor would be totally worth it. There is much more substance to my proposal, though.

More from Doctor Who

Actors from both Keeping Up Appearances and Young Hyacinth could appear on Doctor Who as their sitcom characters as a promotion for the prequel special. Seeing as how Young Hyacinth is set in the 1950s, this makes for some timey wimey possibilities. Imagine watching the Doctor deal with both the elder (Patricia Routledge) and the younger (Kerry Howard) Hyacinths! And noting the obvious similarities between Richard and Mr. Copper, they could somehow be related. (Copper Bucket… That’s pretty funny.) Considering the wibbly wobbly nature of Doctor Who, this could be explained despite their being from different planets.

Given how beloved both of these programs are, it seems like a win-win.
