There have been quite a few times when Doctor Who has been criticized for their portrayal of female characters. However, they have historically done quite well in providing strong female role models.

When it comes to females, there are quite a few times where Doctor Who has been criticized for how they handle their roles. Complaints have been made as to how females are portrayed as damsels in distress, or how there is a lack of females behind the scenes. At times, these complaints are certainly valid.

However, during the history of the show, Doctor Who has also done a good job of providing strong female role models. Even from the very beginning, when Barbara refused to compromise her morals and stood up for her beliefs, that strong presence was there. That legacy has continued forward through this day.

That is especially the case when it comes to female scientists. In a study, Doctor Who was shown as not only giving female scientists value, but increasing their roles and prominence in the show. In fact, one of our favorite characters, Osgood, is one of those female scientists who have taken on an important role within the show.

With the concern about a lack of female scientists in real life, seeing such characters in a positive light may help. As Doctor Who has had more and more female characters in these stronger roles, being true role models for those interested in pursuing such a career, there are characters for younger girls to look up to. Maybe a young girl wants to be like Osgood and follow such a career herself, but would not have considered such a career if not for the show.
