Doctor Who: Bill Has a Fan in Russell T Davies

Maybe some in the fanbase are not onboard with Bill as the new companion, but former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies likes the casting of Pearl Mackie on the show.

Pearl Mackie certainly made an impression in her first appearance as the new companion on Doctor Who. In her one minute introductory trailer as Bill, Mackie drew some rather strong reaction from fans, be they positive or negative. If that appearance is any indication, Bill is going to be quite the controversial companion.

However, Mackie has one particularly important fan as a result of her brief appearance. While he may no longer be an active part of Doctor Who, Russell T Davies has voiced his support for Mackie’s character, saying that he cannot wait for her appearance, as he feels it will reinvigorate the show.

That is definitely an interesting way of looking at her appearance. Bill does appear as though she will add a bit of an every person aspect to the show, asking those questions that most people, if thrust into the same situation, would ask as well. In doing so, it certainly seems that Bill will be one of the most relatable companions since the revival of the program.

Perhaps that is something that Doctor Who needs at this point. One of the critiques of Peter Capaldi’s incarnation of the Doctor is that he is not personable, being more sarcastic and unapproachable than what viewers have become accustomed to. In having someone to whom the fans can connect, and place themselves into that same situation, the rougher edges of Capaldi’s Doctor may be blunted a bit more.

Pearl Mackie may still be an unknown quantity on Doctor Who, but she does have quite a few vocal supporters among the alumni on the show. Now, Russell T Davies can be added to that list.
