Doctor Who: Could the Eighth Doctor Return?

ByDavid Hill|

Paul McGann has not had many chances to explore the Eighth Doctor outside of the Big Finish audio dramas. Could he either make a return to Doctor Who, or have a chance at his own show?

On Doctor Who, there are two Doctors whose pasts have not truly been delved into. The Eighth Doctor had a movie and a short, leading into the War Doctor’s appearance in the 50th anniversary special. Yet, we still have not learned much about their backgrounds, nor have we seen their other adventures depicted on screen.

Yes, the Big Finish audio dramas help. They have given a new life, and a different dimension, to these Doctors, but it is not quite the same as seeing them on television once again. As it turns out, Paul McGann would have a great deal of interest in either coming back to the show, or having a spinoff with his character, although he acknowledged that it would need to happen soon.

More from Doctor Who

As McGann noted, there is still a great deal to the Eighth Doctor’s story. He feels that the Doctor’s tale “ain’t quite over” and that there is a lot of potential in the character. Besides, as McGann has observed, he is younger than Peter Capaldi. There is still time, even if it is running out, for McGann to suit back up in the role of the Doctor.

Perhaps the best way for the Eighth Doctor to make his return would be in an episode with multiple Doctors. With Series Ten upcoming, this may be a decent time to get another episode utilizing this concept. In fact, should this truly be the final season for Capaldi, perhaps his final episode could have multiple Doctors fighting some stronger menace.

Paul McGann would like to see the Eighth Doctor have his background explored a bit more on television, either on Doctor Who or in a spinoff. It may not be likely, but McGann is certainly interested in making a return.
