Game of Thrones Screencap Breakdown: “Battle of the Bastards”
By Ani Bundel
This is the body pile at about the halfway point of the battle. It’s basically a wall in which people are standing on and attempting to fight.
With the pile of bodies so big, Davos finally loses his head and brings the rest of the army into the fight. This is what Ramsay has been waiting for.
Smalljon Umber works as Ramsay’s heavy, leading the men into the fray and screaming “Who owns the North?”
Meanwhile, in people who have been fighting the entire time, Jon gets pulled out of the mud by Tormund.
Wun Wun kicks horses and their headless riders like soccer balls.
He also point out to the audience that Things Are Happening.
I’ve had several people tell me that this part of the battle was actually their favorite.
And though the production talked about not wanting to do a lot of overhead arial shots, this one in particular was extremely useful to those who are not militarily trained, so we could comprehend the trap that Ramsay has sprung on his opponents.
TFMW you realize you just got hosed a second time.
The overheard shot provides the context of those shields running behind Davos and the wildling company…
…are closing them in.
Team Stark is pinned by a semi-circle of shields on three sides, and a wall of bodies behind them.
Smalljon Umber and co are coming in over the body wall.
There are shots here of those dying on the pile being stepped on and fought upon, but I could not bring myself to snap them.
Instead, let’s focus on Ramsay’s choice to use extra long pikes to keep the giant at bay.
Tormund attempts to break through the shield wall and just can’t quite manage it.
After he gets cut, the other wildlings pull him back, which is one reason Tormund survives this week.
This is the shield wall and behind the shield wall….the backup shield wall. It’s basically unbreakable from the inside.
Jon’s entire force is now pinned in by Ramsay.
