This year, the GoT Territory campaign has been drawing attention to Northern Ireland’s role as a production center for Game of Thrones by fashioning a number of gorgeously carved doors based on episodes from the show’s sixth season. (Also: Valyrian steel kitchen knives.) The doors are made from wood from trees along the Dark Hedges, a Northern Irish landmark that stood in for the Kingsroad on the show. This week’s door honors “Battle of the Bastards” and pretty much speaks for itself.
Not that that’ll stop me speaking for it, since, as usual, it’s wonderfully done. As you can see, the door symbolizes the battle between Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton for control of Winterfell, with the Stark direwolf at the top, the Bolton flayed man at the bottom, and Winterfell in the center. The growling hounds at the base of the door don’t bode well for Ramsay.
Check out some detail shots.
The margins of the door are a mess of weapons and sigils, suggesting the chaos of the battle. Winterfell alone looks placid.
Unlike the other doors, which have been stored in pubs throughout Northern Ireland, this one will be housed in Ballygally Castle, in County Antrim. Since “Battle of the Bastards” was all about a fight for a castle, I suppose that makes sense.
The GoT Territory campaign has also been working with the Royal Mail to make a series of Game of Thrones-themed stamps. This week, the lion of Lannister roars in the corner of your letters.
