Doctor Who: Reactions to the Brexit Decision
By David Hill
In one of the more stunning decisions made in recent times, the United Kingdom has decided to leave the European Union. Doctor Who’s writers and actors, both current and from the past, have taken to social media to show their displeasure with the vote.
One of the main themes in Doctor Who is togetherness. The show does an incredible job of being inclusive, and while they could do better when it comes to having a more diverse cast, Doctor Who illustrates the value inherent in everyone on the planet, or even in the Universe for that matter. There is no such thing as someone who is unimportant, even if the Doctor may get frustrated with their questions at times.
Given the show’s stance on unity and togetherness, it may not be a surprise that the actors and writers of Doctor Who were not pleased with the decision made by the United Kingdom to leave the European Union. As such, they took to social media to air their frustrations, decrying the exit and the sad state of the British Pound.

The ripple effects of such a decision are already being felt. Scotland voted to be a part of the EU, and is once again voting for their independence. There is renewed hope that Ireland will become a unified country once again. The United Kingdom, as it has been known, could be dissolving before our very eyes due to this decision.
It will be interesting to see how this decision affects Doctor Who as well. With the sudden, and dramatic, drop in the value of the Pound, the government may look towards cost cutting measures. The BBC has been listed as one area for potential cuts in the past, and if the monetary woes continue, those threatened budget cuts may become a reality.
