Doctor Who: The End of the Paternoster Gang?

The Paternoster Gang has made quite the impression since they appeared in Doctor Who. There has even been hope for a spinoff at some point, either with Big Finish, or otherwise. But could their time be coming to an end?

Since they first appeared together on Doctor Who, The Paternoster Gang has left a mark upon the show. Between the surprising, and rather charming, relationship between Madame Vastra and Jenny, and the hilariously murderous Strax, they have quite the legion of fans. As such, their appearances on the show are always welcomed events, almost certain to delight the funny bone and provide excellent content to the episode.

But could their time be coming to an end soon? Steven Moffat, who was responsible for bringing that unlikely grouping together, will be departing after this series. That is enough to make Catlin Stewart, who portrays Jenny, wonder as to whether or not they will get to return to the show, especially after Moffat leaves.

More from Winter is Coming

It would certainly be a tremendous loss should incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall not make use of the fan favorites. We have already seen other favorite recurring characters, such as Captain Jack, go by the wayside for whatever reason. Other recurring characters have come and gone over the years, with Nardole set to become yet another one to show up when Series Ten starts. But could the Paternoster Gang really be pushed aside?

Such a move may well create an uproar amongst the fanbase as when Captain Jack left. Yes, we had Torchwood, but since the show has been on hiatus, we have not seen his return to Doctor Who. Yes, a spinoff would mitigate some of the annoyance at not having the trio on the show, but how long would one last? And, if the spinoff is just on Big Finish, it would not be the same.

Hopefully, The Paternoster Gang will return, and do so in Series Ten, despite Stewart having not heard anything about that at this point. To lose yet another excellent collection of recurring characters would be a tremendous disappointment.
