Doctor Who Christmas Special Companion Mystery

We all know that there will be a new companion during Series Ten of Doctor Who, but with whom will the Doctor share his adventure during the upcoming Christmas special?

A lot has been made of Bill, the new companion set to be introduced during Series Ten of Doctor Who. She has already elicited quite the reaction, with strong opinions being formulated about her, despite her introduction scene being a mere two minutes long. Such is the way of fandom.

But we are not here to rehash the reaction to Bill. Instead, she serves as a bridge to the topic at hand. Steven Moffat has said that Bill is to be introduced in an episode in 2017, not the 2016 Christmas special. This is despite recent photographs of her on set in Cardiff, which has been turned into a wintry landscape for an upcoming Doctor Who episode. It would make sense for such a setting to be part of the Christmas special, but it could very well be for a different episode… or perhaps both. Also, it is quite possible that Moffat released inaccurate information, perhaps to throw us off the trail.

So, if not Bill, then who will be the companion for the special? Plenty of ideas have been floated about, the most solid of which being that it will be Nardole. He is reported to be a recurring character in Series Ten, and Matt Lucas has also been seen recently on set. It is certainly fun to speculate as to whom the Doctor will have with him aboard the TARDIS as we celebrate the holidays with our favorite Time Lord.

Of course, the question also needs to be asked as to whether or not the Doctor really needs a companion during the special. These are stand alone episodes after all, and only somewhat related to the season, if at all.

The lighthearted feel of Christmas specials potentially makes them great vehicles for easing long-term companions into life with the Doctor, but it does not seem that this will be the case this time around. It may well be, however, that we get to meet a new recurring character, or present yet another person who will make us wonder what would have happened had they stayed with the Doctor for longer. Oh, Astrid.
