Doctor Who Showrunner Steven Moffat to Receive Honorary Doctorate

Peter Capaldi will no longer be the only Doctor on the set of Doctor Who, as Steven Moffat will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of the West of Scotland.

One of the ongoing jokes on Doctor Who is the question of what, exactly, the Doctor is, well, a doctor. Is he a medical doctor, a doctor of physics, or does he even have a doctorate in something as esoteric as folklore and mythology? Indeed, his chosen title and sobriquet are a description of himself as much as anything else.

Now, there will be more than one Doctor in a prominent position on the set of Doctor Who for Series Ten. Not only do we have Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, but showrunner Steven Moffat will be given an honorary doctorate on July 5th from the University of the West of Scotland during their graduation ceremony at Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church.

With this honorary degree, Moffat’s hometown of Paisley has found an official way to celebrate his accomplishments. According to Professor Craig Mahoney, the Principal and Vice-Chancellor at the school, Moffat is someone who should be held up as an example of making one’s dreams come true.

"“Steven is a great role model for anyone, not just our students, and demonstrates that your path in life will be determined by your own passion for the things you believe in.”"

That was certainly the case with Moffat. A Doctor Who fan growing up, he managed to find a way to become a part of the show, eventually being able to mold the program into his own vision. A big reason for the show achieving so much success over the past few years to the point of becoming a global cultural phenomenon, Moffat is certainly deserving of the honor.

Wait… doctor of what?

For one season at least, there will be two Doctors on the set of Doctor Who. As long as Steven Moffat does not hijack the TARDIS, that should work out just fine. Congratulations, Steven!
