Doctor Who Wins Title of Fan Favorite Sci Fi Show in Poll

Digital Spy polled their readers on their favorite science fiction show and Doctor Who came out on top.

Doctor Who originally ran from 1963 to 1989. Then there was a television movie in 1996, with the show finally returning with regular seasons in 2005 and still running. There are a few reasons why the franchise has such strong staying power.

From the beginning, it presented audiences with highly innovative concepts — an extraterrestrial who not only travels with his granddaughter and her teachers through time and space in a police box that is bigger on the inside, but also lives on Earth. Such a thing had never been seen before, and instantly captured the imagination of the audience. But the show did not stop there with its originality. Eventually, the concept of regeneration was introduced. With this, the epicness the show’s entire mythos increased. Many other creative ideas have been added over the decades.

In conjunction with this, Doctor Who‘s virtually limitless boundaries — combined with its powerful and poignant discussions surrounding ethics and morality — gives the show a timeless appeal. In addition to that, it has evolved with the times. Many people include Doctor Who on their list of favorite shows, often being at the top.

The show’s popularity was reflected in a recent reader poll done by Digital Spy, the results of which put the program in the number one spot, beating out fifty four other science fiction shows. Out of almost fifty five thousand votes, it received 4.9 thousand, which is almost nine percent of the total number of votes. By a mere one hundred less votes, Babylon 5 came in second place with 4.8 thousand. Doctor Who‘s spin-off Torchwood came in twelfth place with 1.4 thousand votes.
