Of all the ridiculous rumors that have come forth about the next Doctor is the idea of ‘degeneration,’ allowing Matt Smith to return to Doctor Who. He finally put that theory to rest.
It is understood why fans would want to see Matt Smith return to Doctor Who. He is one of the more beloved incarnations of the Doctor, and someone who has truly helped bring the show to its current level of popularity. Of course, given his stature and how much of a fan favorite he has been, when Smith stated that he would love to return to the show, it grabbed the attention of those fans.
And so, the rumors of degeneration and the return of Smith as the Doctor began. While they were wholly unrealistic and unfounded from the start — originating from a poorly written article featuring several quotes taken out of context — the rumor grew legs and people began to run with it. The power of wishful thinking, right?

Fortunately, for all of our sakes, Matt Smith addressed those rumors recently. Not only has he stated that he is a fan of Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, but that he, himself, is not coming back. Yes, he misses being the Doctor. And yes, he misses the show, Jenna Coleman, and the ability to travel through time and space. But that does not mean that he is going to return as the next Doctor.
So, thank you, Matt Smith, for taking the time to address this ridiculous rumor. Otherwise, we may be inundated with various breathless reports about “events” such as you getting coffee in Cardiff on some random afternoon — meaning, of course, that you are returning to the show since that is where Doctor Who films. It would be nice to see you in a special, though.
