Doctor Who: Nardole More than Comic Relief
By David Hill
When it was announced that Nardole would be coming back as a recurring character for Series Ten of Doctor Who, expectations were that he would be nothing more than comic relief. Yet, he could, and probably will be so much more.
When last we saw Nardole, he was joined with King Hydroflax’s mechanical body. Along with Ramone, they took turns controlling the machine, working at a restaurant near the Singing Towers. Ramone was in control of the body, as Nardole was getting some “me time,” something that would be difficult with multiple heads inhabiting the same figure.
But now, we get to see Nardole during what appears to be before that change takes place. He will be there with Bill and the Doctor, sharing their adventures in Series Ten as a recurring character. Given his relatively and deliberately humorous appearance, it is thought that he will be a comic foil to the more straightlaced Doctor, the former being a light hearted role that could be looked upon to broaden appeal.

- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
Yet, there appears to be more to Nardole than meets the eye. That desire for alone time, and his protestations about being put back into storage hint that Nardole has a lot more depth than one would originally have thought. In fact, Nardole could prove to be one the more misunderstood characters in NuWho, at least based on his initial appearance.
Instead of the jovial, comedic fellow that he presented, there is more hidden away in his mind. He seems quite introspective, aware of who he is and his limitations. Nardole may also prove to be somewhat observant, as he quietly stands off to the side and takes in events around him. In fact, it is not farfetched to think that he could become a trusted confidant for the Doctor as Series Ten roles on.
And then, of course, there is the following insight from Lucas, himself.
