Doctor Who: NASA Scientists Add TARDIS to Mars Simulation

Adding some spacey wacey fun to their lives, NASA scientists, who were part of a year-long Mars isolation simulation, made a door into the entrance to the TARDIS.

Amongst people who love space, there are many who also love Doctor Who. It is quite understandable, considering how much the show values a sense of wonder about the Universe, as well as a drive for exploration. Back in May, we covered the story of the new slogan for Space Center Houston. Proudly displaying their Doctor Who fandom, they decided on the phrase “Bigger on the inside.”

In related news, it has recently been reported by Paul Jones of Radio Times that a team of six NASA scientists incorporated Doctor Who into their Mars isolation simulation. Lasting an entire year, they needed to find ways to make life more interesting. One creative touch was to put a TARDIS on it, so to speak. An otherwise basic entrance to their living quarters became the entrance to the iconic blue box.

The test was completed successfully and will certainly help prepare humans for many challenges on Sol IV. But just how much did it cover? As we know from Doctor Who, there is often more to the Red Planet than meets the eye. Do we know what to do when faced with a Gandoran, or an Ice Warrior? What if we find pyramids? And are we absolutely sure that it is safe to drink the water?
