With a trailer, the BBC has given us our first glimpse of the upcoming animation of the lost Doctor Who Second Doctor serial ‘The Power of the Daleks.’

"“50 Years After Its First Transmission… A Lost Classic Returns”"

The end of last month, we shared the story about how BBC Worldwide is producing animated versions of the lost Second Doctor six-part serial ‘The Power of the Daleks.’ On Tuesday, September 6th, the official Doctor Who Youtube channel posted a trailer for the project, which can be viewed below.

In it, we see both Lesterson, the Chief Scientist of the human colony on Vulcan, and ominous footage of Daleks creating more of their own kind.

The animation is properly done in black and white to retain some of the feel of the original broadcast. In contrast, the audio of the trailer is tailored to appeal to more modern audiences, reminiscent of music by the likes of Depeche Mode and KMFDM. It works well, however, in that it does a good job emphasizing the dire events of the adventure without minimizing the vintage aspects.

More from Winter is Coming

Producer and director of the project, Charles Norton, calls it “the most ambitious Doctor Who archive restoration ever attempted.” It “is based on film clips, surviving photographs and audio recordings featuring the original cast.” Before now, reconstructions of lost episodes were created by piecing these things together. This was done by such companies as Loose Cannon Productions. A photonovel version of ‘The Power of the Daleks’ using telesnaps can be viewed on the BBC’s website.

‘The Power of the Daleks’ was the first full adventure for the Second Doctor, and featured companions Polly Wright and Ben Jackson. The animated version will premiere in the BBC Store on November 5th, “50 years to the minute after its broadcast on BBC One.” It will also later air on BBC America on November 12th (available on the 13th on both BBCAmerica.com and the BBC AMERICA app), and be released on DVD on November 21st.
