19. Sansa’s Traveling Outfit

This carryover look from the end of Season 5 took on new significance at the beginning of Season 6. The irony of Season 5 is that the audience came into Sansa’s storyline prepped to see the new “Dark Sansa” as this figure of power, making her own decisions and playing the game like a champ. But clothes did not make the Queen. Her black outfits might have been striking, but inside was the same girl who too easily believed in fairy tales and trusted those she shouldn’t.

Once again, this season emphasized that when it comes to Sansa, it’s not about her clothes. Here, she is wearing dingy greys, browns, and depressed blues, the clothes she wore during her marriage to Ramsay. The irony is that it’s in these clothes that she finally stands up for herself and finds that steel spine we’ve been praying for all these seasons. This is the dress in which she accepted Brienne’s sword. It’s what she’s wearing when she stands up to Littlefinger, and when she manipulates Jon into attacking Winterfell and taking back their home. Not bad for the modest mouse.
